Larger scale restoration and landscaping: Robertsbridge, East Sussex

This garden was half an acre of totally overgrown wilderness surrounding and including a central clogged up and foul-smelling pond. It took two weeks to clear the area so we could see what lay beneath. The big machine, which I did not drive, cleared the pond and re-puddled the clay base. Cleared clay etc. was left around the edges and the pond refilled naturally over winter because the ground was too wet to work.

In late spring, I went in with a smaller digger and began to shape the ground, which took a while and this included building all of the banks which you can see etc. The whole thing was rotovated, hand-raked and rolled and seeded. The border and planting went in over a period of time and ongoing maintenance was needed now and then by boat to weed the pond. This border is further described in the garden miscellany section of this site.
